My friend said she shook during delivery is this normal?

It is not uncommon to shake or be tremulous during or after the delivery and it happens without you even trying to stop it. Doctors feel it is due to a rush of adrenaline around the time of delivery so you will begin to shake uncontrollably. It usually comes after the delivery is over but can occur during the pushing phase of the delivery.

Not every mom experiences this by a long shot but the few who do get worried about what it means. It isn’t harmful to the baby or the mother and it lasts only about five to ten minutes so if it happens to you, just put on a warm blanket and wait for it to pass. Breathe slowly and comfortably. Your teeth may chatter as if you were cold but it isn’t from the cold and is a harmless thing to have happen.

Taking a deep breath holding it for a a few seconds and blowing it out slow will not stop the shakes but will slow it down. it's very normal and all a part of labor and delivery.

Understand there are LOTS of hormones running at this time, slow down your breathing and relax the best you can. They usually do not last long, and sometimes a warm blanket or rice bag can help.

During labor (and aside from the obvious, like the temperature in the room) trembling can mean a couple of things: Sometimes it means your labor is progressing rapidly, which can be a little scary but is usually a good sign. Sometimes it means you've reached what is sometimes called "transition" - at around 7 or 8 centimeters your body goes into its final phase of labor when lots of hormones, chemicals, and processes go into full swing.

During or after second stage, the time when you're actually birthing your baby, there are a few more things that may contribute to this shaking. One is the adrenaline your body produces as you reach your miraculous goal! A second is another rush of hormones and chemicals as your body does what it needs to do. And a third can be that during second stage most women tighten and use many muscles, especially legs and arms, for quite a while as they work on pushing their baby out. Once the baby is indeed out, those muscles take a little time to adjust to their now "relaxed" state.

All of these things are normal. And though they don't happen because a mom is "cold", a warm blanket, rice socks, and room temperature adjustments can be of help. Some hospitals have a warming fan above the bed; if so, that can help too.

There is also an acupressure technique a partner or doula can use to help, which involves holding mom's feet and pressing fingertips into her soles/arches -- or simply use foot massage with concentration on the soles of the feet.
