What happens if I tear during childbirth?

Most of the time when a woman tears, she tears along the perineal body or the space between the vagina and the rectum. This is where the episiotomy is done anyway and the tear is repaired similar to an episiotomy. If a woman tears in any other way, as in what happens during a labial tear, the doctor repairs the torn part of the woman’s perineum or labia using internal sutures to approximate where everything was before the tear happened.

Tearing in some other way than like an episiotomy takes longer to repair and has a lesser degree of success in the repair. Tears of the labia generally heal very well and you can’t tell that they have occurred later. Tears of the side or obliquely along the perineal body will generally leave a scar and are harder to repair, making a failure of the repair more likely. This is why doctors generally like to do an episiotomy rather than tear. Episiotomies are easy to fix and are easy to recover from.
