Re:How long will I bleed after child birth?
The amount of time a person bleeds after delivery varies. It is generally heavy for up to a week after the delivery and you will need jumbo pads to collect the blood. After a week, it slows down to about as much as a period or less. This can last another week or two but can last for as long as 5 weeks. This is why it is a good idea to finish your iron pills during this time so as to build up your iron stores.
Quite often, the bleeding depends on how active you are. You can have very little bleeding but then do a lot of walking or lifting and then have a gush of bleeding for a day or two. This is one more reason why you must take it easy during the first six weeks after having a baby. The blood loss is mostly blood that you had extra from the pregnancy so you needn’t worry that you’re getting anemic; however, if the bleeding is very heavy for longer than a week, you should see your doctor as it could mean that part of the placenta has been left behind and is bleeding heavily.
