What is a birthing ball?

A birthing ball is a standard physiotherapy ball used in physical therapy. It is sometimes used in labor and delivery to make the labor go more comfortably. The woman sits on the ball and uses something else to support her arms. It forces good posture during labor and decreases the strain on the muscles. It puts the mom in a squatting position which puts the pressure of contractions on the pelvis where it belongs.

One can put the ball against the wall and can use the wall to balance one’s body with your back, making it unnecessary to be supported by a partner. The ball can be used at home in the early stages of labor or it can be brought to the hospital and used there.

You can buy birthing balls at major baby centers or at a fitness store. Another way to use the ball is to sit on the ball and lean over the bed, with or without pillows on the bed. It makes labor more comfortable, especially when compared to laboring on one’s back. It is good for back labor and allows another individual to rub your back when you’re on the ball. Some hospitals allow you to use the ball along with epidural anesthesia. It is comfortable and is a good way to labor.

I great alternative to lying in bed or sitting in a chair (even rocking chair). It helps to relax the perenium and you can move on it as you labor in such a way you could not in a bed or chair. You can use in the shower as well. I highly recommend it.
