Re:How Can I Make the Delivery Room More Intimate?
First, talk with your doctor and the maternity coordinator at the hospital. Find out what is allowed at your particular facility and what is not. This is a great conversation to have at your hospital tour or pre-registration appointment. I always brought my own pillow and my own music, which helped.
If you have a choice between hospitals, check out all of the available options. Some hospitals have birthing centers or maternity wards (do they still call them that?!) that are very homey – the beds don’t look like hospital beds, the furniture is wood and not metal, etc. Hopefully, your labor and delivery room will have a good-sized tub which can make hospital labor feel more like a home labor. Also talk to your doctor about who can and will be in the room. You may want to work out a birth plan that limits the number of medical personnel on hand to the bare necessities (i.e. no med students looking on) but allows various family members to be present.
