Default Big Baby = Difficult Birth?

At my last ultrasound the doctor commented that it looked like the baby was going to be fairly big. Does that mean that I will have an especially difficult labor?

Not necessarily! My first baby was 10 lbs. 4 oz. I never dilated on my own and, finally, at 41 weeks, I was induced. I went into the hospital at about 7:00 a.m., got the Pitocin drip at about 8:00 a.m., asked for an epidural at about 1:00 p.m. and had him at 7:30 p.m. I pushed for about 30 minutes and he came right out. I did have an episiotomy to help him out but that was as complicated as it got. (For the record, I am not petite but not big either. I’m 5’6” and my pre-pregnancy weight was about 145 lbs.) Big babies do cause some women to have trouble but not all women. Ask your doctor what she thinks. She may be able to gauge the relative size of your pelvis and give you some delivery advice or options.

Not necessarily. My easiest delivery was my largest baby. Ultrasound weight estimates are notorious for being wrong, too!

Trust your body and your baby. You will typically not grow a baby you cannot birth. Ultrasound is notorius for being wrong when it comes to predicting babies weight at birth. Don't get talked into a c-section due to a "big baby".

I had a fairly big baby - 9lbs 1oz and she was my easiest delivery.

I agreed with this ... and you need to consult the Doctor for advice about what she/he thing about this matter.
