Default Focal Point for Labor

Did anyone successfully use a focal point during labor? With my first child I couldn't have cared less, but I am wondering whether I should give it another try this time around.

Why not give it a try? It certainly won’t hurt anything. I never used a focal point but I also had epidurals when my contractions became more than just uncomfortable. So, maybe I’m not the best person to ask. I can totally understand how focal points can help some women. If you’re exhausted and frustrated and starting to lose focus, a deep breath and the ability to bring that one object into your eyesight so that you can reconnect with the task at hand seems like it could be powerfully calming. Labor and delivery can (but isn’t always) be kind of crazy. If this one thing can help you keep your “eyes on the prize”, why not give it another shot?

Practice what works best for you. I have my mothers practice focused awareness on a focal point using ice cubes as a pain stimulus. I also have them practice a more inward breathing focused awareness with their eyes closed. For some reason going inside and blocking the outside world works best for them and for others concentration on something outside their body works better.

Think about what usually works when you're stressed or having some discomfort. Does it usually help to turn your attention outward or inward? And of course you can always practice in advance of your labor to see what serves you best. I find most women usually do well focusing inward - visualizing the positive aspects of the process as it occurs, or doing some guided imagery. Either can work very well, especially with verbal prompting from your partner, your doula, or a pre-recorded CD.

The first time I kept my eyes closed the whole time! I think if you practice relaxing with them prenatally, as a focus meditation it could be really helpful. I have The Childbirth Kit which includes different photos for different stages of labor, and has suggestions on the back of the card as well.

Some people prefer to use a focal point, and others close their eyes to focus inward. I think it depends on what the mom prefers, but most importantly, what they have practiced. That'll also help a great deal in labor. Good luck and let us know what worked for you.
