Re:What to Look For in a Carseat
Go to the store and “test drive” a few. If you’re looking at infant carriers, is it relatively comfortable to carry? Too unwieldy or heavy (although they’re all pretty unwieldy and heavy…). Does it connect to the stroller you’d like to have? Check out the weight limit. Some infant carriers are approved only for babies up to 20 pounds. Others are okay for babies up to 30 pounds. Does it fit in your car? Especially if you have a compact car or a two-door car – the shape of some infant carriers don’t work well in smaller cars.
If you weren’t considering an infant carrier, is the car seat approved for newborn-sized babies. Can it be installed rear-facing as well as forward-facing – babies should be rear-facing at least until age one and twenty pounds. Think about whether it might be worth it to use an infant carrier until your baby is not sleeping all the time (getting babies out of carseat straps wakes them up every time!).
When you find a few you like, go home and check out the internet reviews. Real-life opinions from real-life parents can be very enlightening and helpful!
