Re:Are Tanning Beds Safe During Pregnancy?
I don't think that there has been any conclusive study showing harm to a developing fetus from a tanning bed. But they're sure not good for you!
UV radiation causes skin cancer. In fact, there has been a study which suggests that even tanning in a tanning bed or booth once a month for a year can almost double your chances of developing melanoma. Melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of cancer and is the only type of cancer that can spread to your placenta.
The heat from a tanning bed could also be hazardous - just like hot tubs and saunas, elevated body temps can cause problems for developing babies.
The UV rays may also cause you to be more likely to develop chloasma - or the mask of pregnancy - dark splotches of pigment that can appear on your face during pregnancy.
Stick to bronzers, self-tanners and spray tans!
