Default Exercising after already having experienced a pre-term birth

All my life, I have been very physically active. I continued my usual fitness regimen when I was pregnant with my first child. Unfortunately, my little girl was born six weeks too early. She is fine now, but it was a very worrisome time. I am expecting number two and the doctor told me to be careful and keep physical exertion down. What does that mean? Do I have to lie on the couch all day or is there some exercise I can do? I do not want to risk another premature baby, but neither can I stand the idea of not exercising at all.

There is no real evidence that heavy physical activity contributed to your baby being premature. On the other hand, when one has had a previous preterm birth, they are likely to have a higher risk for another preterm birth. This means that you should limit your physical activity to walking and/or swimming, especially in the third trimester. Such simple acts of exercise may not be what you are used to but it is best for the baby if you cut down on physical activity.
