I have read that you should avoid Mozzarella cheese when pregnant. I’m not sure if this is even true, but if it is, does that mean I can’t have any pizza now?

You can eat Mozzarella and other cheeses when you are pregnant so long as they are pasteurized. You can even eat pizza when you are pregnant. Cheese provides plenty of milk protein to the diet and also is a good source of dietary calcium. You need a thousand milligrams of calcium per day while you are pregnant and just 1/4 cup of shredded or 1 ounce of most hard cheeses adds 200 mg of calcium to meals and snacks. If you're counting fat grams, low-fat, light, or reduced-fat cheeses are a lower-fat, calcium-rich option.

The concern is about Listerosis in mozzarella cheese. Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that is found in water and soil. Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil, and animals can also be carriers. Listeria has been found in uncooked meats, uncooked vegetables, unpasteurized milk, foods from unpasteurized milk and processed foods. Listeria is killed by pasteurization and cooking. Listeria-caused diseases are rare and are not really that likely to be found in mozzarella cheese.

Of course, a good home made pizza would be the healthiest choice, one full of veggies, lower sodium, etc. If you do opt for take out, try to get the thin crust on whole wheat, less cheese, with lots and lots of veggies! YUM!
