Default Afraid of What Pregnancy is Going to Do to My Body

I know it is a bit superficial but I can't help being afraid of what this pregnancy will do to my looks. I have always worked hard to stay slim and in shape and now I am starting to look like a buffalo. And it isn't just the weight (which hopefully will come back off) but I have also heard horror stories of sagging breasts, larger feet, losing most of your hair - will it really be that bad?

No, it won’t be that bad – as long as you keep your expectations in line with reality. Your body will absolutely change with pregnancy – breastfeeding changes your breasts, hormones do funky things to your hair, feet swell. But I’ve never met anyone who lost “most” of their hair due to a pregnancy – you grow thicker hair during your pregnancy and, as your post-pregnancy hormones adjust, the extra hair does fall out – but you don’t have less than what you started with! And I’ve never met anyone who really gained more than a ½ shoe size permanently (although I’m sure that some women picked up a full shoe size). And the boobs? That probably depends on how long you breast feed and on your body itself.

I think that someone who really works on their body as a rule before pregnancy (and doesn’t go crazy with food and weight gain during pregnancy) will probably have a relatively easy time getting back to normal. But don’t beat yourself up about it! The changes your body is going through are totally normal and are for a very good reason. You’re going to be a mother and you should be proud of the work your body is doing to achieve that title.
