Default Chances of Birth Defects

Several people I know have children with various birth defects. I admire my friends for the wonderful parenting job they are doing but I am not at all sure that I could do the same. What are the chances that there will be something wrong with my baby?

Default Re: Chances of Birth Defects

The chances for various birth defects really depends a lot on you, your genetics, those of your partner and chance. Rather than speculate as to the various odds for defects, I would recommend that you talk to your doctor about prenatal genetic screening, testing and counseling. Some basic screenings are offered by your OB – such as the quad screen which tests your blood serum for indicators of open neural tube defects, Down Syndrom and trisomy 18. There are some additional genetic screens which can be performed and some additional analysis performed based upon the genetic history of both parents. You can also investigate amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling as well as ultrasound – all of which can identify various birth defects.
