I am looking for some advice on maternity wear. I need to look presentable for the office but don't want to spend tons of money on clothes I will only be wearing for a couple of months. What is the best way to set up a decent maternity wardrobe on a budget?

Start with a list of what you’ll need. Think about your office needs and your casual/home needs. After you know what basic items you’re looking for, start by checking with friends who’ve already had babies. Chances are good that they’ve got a plastic bin or garbage bag in a closet with a ton of maternity clothes gathering dust. I borrowed from multiple friends.

Check out eBay, Craiglist, thrift stores, consignment stores, consignment sales and garage sales. These are all great places to find a bargain. Many maternity clothes – especially work clothes – are still in great shape after only one pregnancy because, like you said, they’re only worn for a couple of months.

If you haven’t gotten all of the items on your list at this point, head to discount stores like Target and Walmart for cheap, trendy pieces. If you have an outlet mall nearby, check to see if there is a maternity wear store there. You can get some great buys on staple items there. Also watch out for Babies R Us coupons. They carry a limited maternity line in store and some of their coupons can really help!

Clearance sales!! Motherhood Maternity, Babies R Us and Kohls all have awesome maternity sales. Also, look for "regular" clothes in styles conducive to pregnancy... long flowy shirts and pants with elastic waists. These will save you a lot of money.

Focus on purchasing a few classics for the office -- black pants, blazer, etc. and see what you can beg, borrow or use from your existing wardrobe.

You may also check garage sales since spring is coming and Freecycle. You may be able to pick up some great deals on baby stuff there, too.

I totally lucked out with my pregnancy -- a close friend who is the same size as me and pregnant at the same time of year (4 years ago) loaned me all her maternity clothes. Maternity styles don't really change. Between that and a few tops I picked up at Target, a cute sundress, and some treats my mother-in-law bought me, I had a maternity wardrobe better than my regular one! LOL Oh, and I got two big bags full of clothes from Freecycle but they were mostly larger sizes so I re-freecycled what I didn't want.

Check with family and friends, ask around. Most women are happy to give/lend their old maternity clothes because, as we said, they don't get worn very long!

Yard sales, consignment shops, freecycle, craigslist, your friends & family and on and on. You are in luck because right now many styles look like they are made for the pregnant mama. What's great about these is that you can even wear them after you have your baby. Of course these are tops and dresses I'm referring to, pants are pretty much maternity size or sweat pants. Try and stick with basic essentials for a classic look. For example you could wear a great black shirt with khaki pants, a gray skirt, and even shorts for after work. If you bought a shirt with a bright pattern you aren't able to mix and match as much. Stick with a classic style and accent it for your own personal look. I hope this helps.

Buy pieces that grow with you. There are several places that sell pieces that are adjustable (pants shirts ext.) The other thing is to buy what you would normally wear just in a few sizes bigger. hardly anyone is the same size they were before child birth, so you will need some bigger clothes for a few months until you get back down to your size! I had good luck with Old Navy. Also a lot of the shirts now adays kind of look like maternity so I just bought them in larger sizes.
