Default The soy debate

Internet sources are very divided on the consumption of soy before and during pregnancy . Soy is a valuable source of protein for vegetarians but of course it contains estrogen which some say are not good for the mother or fetus. However, the number one natural prenatal supplement out there (New Chapter) contains significant amounts of soy, but I chose a different one due to my uncertainty. Did any mothers out there eat soy while trying to conceive or during pregnancy, or were told not to?

Soy does contain phytoestrogens or isoflavones (a plant derived estrogen), which have been found to produce a variety of mild hormonal actions within the human body. The hormones sort of interrupt how reproductive organs, cells and even immune systems develop. Studies have found that high levels of soy protein in the diet may decrease fertility.

A normal intake of soy shouldnt adversely affect your chances of conception, but if soy is the only form of protein your getting as a vegetarian, I would sugges to expand your veggie protein horizons! While soy is a really great protein otpion for vegetarians, it's not the only one. Protein can be found in other non-meat resources as well including; legumes, nuts and seeds, dairy (if you're not vegan!), whole grains, algae and sea veggies, seitan, eggs (again, if you're not vegan!) and even vegetables!

I am a avid soy user. My kids get it and so do I. But... too much soy is linked to dangerously high amounts of estrogen, too much estrogen is linked to things like breast cancer. I did take in the daily amounts of soy recommend by my OB during my time with child. My children came out very large and healthy. Needless to say my OB was proud of me.
