Buying Baby Clothes: Getting the right size

ar_giftThere’s nothing more frustrating than getting a lovely present for your baby that is too small. It is so embarrassing to have to tell your friend that they bought the wrong size and have them return it. And then the poor friend! How upsetting it is to know that you misjudged the baby’s size and bought too small!

I know that when I go shopping for clothes for my daughter it is so hard not to buy the first cute outfit that looks like it will fit. There are so many adorable clothes out there and she’d look fantastic in so many of them. But she’s a big girl, and I just know that she’ll grow out of the stuff that is geared to her age in no time flat.

When my daughter was born she was already too big for a lot of the stuff I got at my baby shower. Those dainty little newborn outfits? Not a chance! At over 10 lb at birth, she was a monster and needed 3 month sized clothes from day one.

Fortunately some of my friends thought ahead and bought larger sizes for my baby. In fact, I had clothes up to 6 months in size in her pre-birth wardrobe. She didn’t have to go naked after all!

If you want to buy clothes for your friend’s baby, you should look at getting clothes that may be too big right now, but will be wearable some time in the near future. For newborns, or baby showers, buy clothes labeled 0-3 months or 3 months. For older babies, buy clothes one size range above their current age. Even if the clothes don’t fit yet, they will in time.

Oh, another thing to consider. If you are in an area where the weather varies a lot for the season, buy clothes a season ahead. In the early spring you can buy t-shirts and onesies that can be layered right away and will still be good when the weather gets hotter. Layers are always useful, no matter the season.

Of course, the simplest solution would be to ask your friend what size her baby is, and what types of clothes she needs. But that spoils the surprise. As long as you buy ahead of the baby’s current age, you will be reasonably safe that the clothes will fit and not be wasted. Happy buying!
