Round Ligament Pain: Ahhh, another joy of pregnancy

There are several reasons for stomach muscle pain in pregnancy.  The most common culprit is called “round ligament pain.”  The round ligament connects the front of your uterus to the groin.  These ligaments extend and contract, a lot like muscles but more slowly.  If you stand up quickly, you’re likely to stretch these ligaments too fast and the result is a sharp pain in your lower abdomen.  This pain should only last for a few moments and will usually go away with rest.

Another reason for stomach muscle pain is, of course, the enormous burden of your uterus, amniotic sac, and baby on your stomach and back muscles.  Your lower abdominal muscles actually split down the middle, making more room for your baby, but also making them less capable of supporting the added weight.  If you are experiencing regular lower abdominal pain, you should ask your doctor or midwife about wearing a maternity support belt.

As with any pain you experience while pregnant, you should contact your doctor or midwife immediately if your abdominal pain is extreme or if it’s accompanied by high fever, vomiting, bleeding or dizziness.  And remember that self care is central to a healthy pregnancy.  Rest your body often and eat plenty of nutritious foods that will support your body in the amazing creation of your baby.
