First Day Home: Wonderful and Terrifying!

ar_babyhomeIf you’re a first-time parent and you’re terrified of what happens when you get home with that tiny little baby, you’re not alone.  I’m sure there are a few happy parents who feel totally confident in their abilities, but most of us are just scared.  Don’t worry!  Taking some time to prepare now will make everything easier down the road.

Before you get your baby home, think about how you want that first day to look.  You’re more than likely going to be exhausted, excited, nervous and sleep-deprived already.  What kind of atmosphere are you going to want in that condition?  You might want a big, loving, supportive group of friends and family or you might want to hibernate in with just you and the baby.

Think seriously about whom you’re going to invite over that first day and how you want that to look.  Just like with the delivery room, remember that what’s important is your desires and the needs of the baby.  Your family and friends can wait a few respectful days to meet the baby if that’s your wish.

As you’re preparing for labor and delivery, think about the home-coming as well.  Often parents are so focused on the birth that they don’t think past that amazing moment to bringing the baby home.  Make sure your space is clean, your fridge is stocked and you’re comfortable in your home.  A lot of people will want to contribute to your family at this time.  Consider asking for homemade meals that you can pop into your freezer.  Making sure that the fridge is stocked and errands are run before the baby comes means that you can focus on your baby and yourself on this first day.

The other thing to consider on this all-important day is sleep.  You’ll want to make sure and get at least one nap in while the baby is sleeping or being held by a trusted family member.  Remember, you won’t be sleeping much in the coming nights and naps will become a true lifeline for you.

The best advice for the first day home is to treasure your time with your precious baby.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bond with your child.  You’ll never have those first, sweet days again.  These are the moments you live for.
